About Us

Born in the spring months of 2011, the idea of Spitting Distance was cooked up in the minds of two soon-to-be-graduates. After studying sickening amounts of literature for three years at the University of Chester, Daniel Gripton and Tom Bowers sought to combine their passion for the written word with their, frankly, quite worrying addiction to music.

The world has adjusted to the shock and awe that the internet rained on the music business. We are now well attuned to the sheer volume of music that is available. Music is no longer traditionally ‘current’; mp3s do not go out of print or demand a financially demanding release. Music is no longer traditionally released either, with rapid digital downloads making music exceptionally accessible, some bands even choose to let buyers ‘name your own price’, including the oh so generous 0 pence. Once put onto a hard drive, whether leaked by a snide journalist, purchased early at a show or preciously thumbed at and carried home on release day, it is only a matter of time before it is accessible like never before. The Internet has it now.

There is no longer a gulf between a record that was rigorously recorded and fine-tuned onto clean vinyl or a four track EP written by an ambitious yet conceited teenager on a dusty tape recorder. Whether sold in high street stores, outside on rain soaked corners, brought to you by parcel or delivered via binary, music is available to everyone if they have the desire to access it. This is what fascinates us at Spitting Distance. The unprecedented accessibility of music, where we are essentially given a free run to find, sample and love sounds that we would never have heard previously, outside of this generation. We aim to cover a variety of genres and acts, from sharpened stadium sell-outs to plucky bedroom dreamers, to give an insight as to what is actively available and worthwhile in a World Wide Web saturated with music.
